Office of Labor Standards Enforcement

The Office of Labor Standards Enforcement (OLSE) enforces labor laws adopted by San Francisco voters and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. OLSE ensures that public works contractors comply with prevailing wage regulations, enforces the Minimum Compensation Ordinance and Health Care Accountability Ordinance, and administers the City's Sweatfree Contracting Ordinance. OLSE also enforces labor laws of general application, including the San Francisco Minimum Wage Ordinance, Paid Sick Leave Ordinance, and Health Care Security Ordinance.

The Healthcare Security Ordinance (HCSO) Internship offers the opportunity to work in a collegial and professional work environment, where civil servants are passionate about implementing cutting edge labor laws. The HCSO Internship provides valuable exposure to knowledge of: City and County Ordinances, particularly the Health Care Security Ordinance; how public policy is established, investigated, enforced and ultimately, how it impacts the San Francisco community.

General Intern Job Description

Under direction of the Labor Standards Compliance Officer, the HCSO Intern may perform several or all of the following duties:

  • Directly support OLSE staff members on enforcement of the Health Care Security Ordinance.
  • Assist with compliance case resolutions, maintain regular communication with employers and complainants; standardize/customize forms, and send inquiries for case updates.
  • Conduct data entry, analysis, and reporting using Microsoft Word and Excel or other related database software.
  • Respond to or refer critical information via phone, email, fax, office mail; and.
  • May exercise other as-needed responsibilities that involve attending and scheduling meetings with city officials, coordinating information gathering, and troubleshooting.

Minimum Qualifications

The candidate must:

  1. Be available to work 25 hours or more per week; (exact schedule and hours negotiable).
  2. Have a 3.0 or higher, if enrolled in an academic program.
  3. Have strong customer service skills, especially over the phone.
  4. Have strong oral and written communication skills.
  5. Be proficient in Microsoft Office, especially MS Word and Excel; and.
  6. Work independently with minimal supervision.

Desirable Qualifications

Preferably the candidate:

  1. Has experience or coursework in business, mathematics, economics, accounting, labor relations, public administration, public policy, government, public health or other related fields.
  2. Has excellent oral and written communication skills.
  3. Has diversified clerical/office experience; and
  4. Has the ability to maintain effective working relations with people in all levels of an organization, clients, press, and the general public.
  5. Proficiency in Spanish, Chinese or another language besides English is a plus.
